Military Museum of Lisbon: inside the history of Portugal

The Military Museum of Lisbon is one of the oldest patrimony of Portugal. At the main entrance, visitors are already surprised by a magnificent stone-carved porch. The female figure symbolizes “The homeland”.

The courtyard, flanked by cannons, tells the story of Portugal in 26 panels of tiles, from the Christian Reconquest to the First World War.

In the collection of the Military Museum, we can find important pieces of bronze artillery. The collection is considered one of the most complete in the world. In the Portuguese artillery section, there is another curiosity: the car used to carry the columns of the Arch of the Augusta Street in Lisbon!

The first destruction of the building began in the cellars, after the explosion caused by the liquid copper in contact with the gunpowder. The “Vasco da Gama” room mixes old cannons and modern murals, bringing some of the history of the discovery of the sea route to India.

The great earthquake of 1755 caused the 2nd destruction of the museum and it already had to be rebuilt twice. A real monument!

On the first floor of the military museum, there are 3 rooms devoted to the First World War. It is also there that the section is in honor of all the unknown soldiers. The museum’s collection contains more than 26,000 pieces of military material, paintings and miniatures.
